Democrats Are Defecting to McCain-Palin in Large Numbers!
Author: tbascomCynthia Ruccia, three-time Democrat Congressional candidate from Ohio, is voting for John McCain. More than that, she was a special guest at the Republican National Convention where she and a crowd of Democrats for McCain gathered in Carly Fiorenza’s skybox to hear Sarah Palin’s history-making speech. In her blog post, “What’s A Nice Democratic Girl Like Me Doing At A Convention Like This?” she records the mood in that skybox:
Sarah Palin - what can I say? She won over everyone in the arena and everyone in our our booth brimming with Democrats. The media can say what it wants, but this lady connects with people. Trust me: She will win many hearts and minds in the weeks to come.
We have waited 24 years to have another woman on a major party presidential ticket. Palin is awesome. And Rick Davis, the McCain campaign manager, told me that they will attack every instance of sexism that’s hurled her way. He said it is disgraceful, and the McCain campaign will not put up with it!
Too bad that the Democratic Party is spineless. It takes a Republican, apparently, to fight sexism.
Why was Ms. Ruccia at the Republican Convention? She is a founding member of The New Agenda (http://www.thenewagenda.net), launched on the last day of August, 2008, to promote women’s interests without regard to party affiliation. A long-time Democrat and a staunch proponent of Senator Clinton’s bid for the Democratic Presidential nomination, she - like many other Democrats - is offended enough by the blatant sexism and disrespect hurled at Senator Clinton that she has turned from her political roots to support the Republican team of McCain and Palin.
Ms. Ruccia says the movement of disaffected Democrats to the Republican party is gaining fast momentum, even though the press insists on acting as if she and her co-organizers are an anomaly:
Since the DNC ended – or as AK Gov. Sarah Palin put it, “those Styrofoam Greek columns” were “hauled back to some studio lot” – more than 50,000 Democrats and Independents have joined up online.
50,000 online registrations since Wednesday! That’s momentum!
Read all of Ms. Ruccia’s comments at: http://www.bloggernews.net/117644. She offers an eye-opening perspective for Democrats and Independents who are not sure which way to vote, and for solid McCain supporters who want to know what’s really happening among the dissenting Democrats.
If you are a Democrat or Independent who would like to join this growing movement, take a look at the following article about Citizens for McCain, and watch the embedded video: http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/02/fiorina-presser-democrats-for-mccain/
Then go to http://citizens.johnmccain.com/citizens.htm, and make your intentions known.
The Republican Party, under the leadership of McCain and Palin, is ready this year to elect the first woman to the White House. Many of the Republicans I know are already talking about putting Palin at the top of the ticket in four years. Join us and help make history!
Recognition: I’d like to extend my special thanks to Dr. KAL, who sent me the link to Ms. Ruccia’s article, and thereby provided my introduction to this fast-breaking story. I appreciate the assist!

Thanks for this. I totally agree. Here’s my analysis of the situation, and I’ll be writing more soon:
http://politicalforumblog.blogspot.com/
One angle on this that I don’t think is getting much press is that I suspect these Clinton to McCain converts are HIGHLY MOTIVATED to vote.
Some pollsters work overtime trying to determine which of their “registered voters” are also “likely voters”. I bet you can put a huge percentage of this population into the likely voter category.
I found out about the New Agenda last week. My aunt and uncle, who are life-long Democrats, say they are voting for McCain/Palin. A friend, another life-long Democrat, said he wants to not only vote for McCain/Palin but he hopes to find time to help with the campaign.
RUBY: Thank you; I greatly appreciate the link to your blog, and your thought-out analysis. My own quibble would be along the lines of mamapajamas’ comments regarding abortion rights. I think she has the right analysis of the impact of any change at the federal level. However, I personally resonate most closely with the Palin family’s great reverence for life that makes abortion a non-option. (I would want to legally enshrine certain exceptions were any effort, state or federal level, made to ban the practice.) Like the responders on your blog, I look forward to future posts.
PAUL: I think you’re right. I’ve been rummaging around some Hillary-supporter blogs tonight and I’ve been impressed by the passion and commitment of both bloggers and responders. And many of them report having family and friends who are just as passionate and determined as they. I think this group is made up of VERY likely voters.
LC: Your friend is duplicated all over the country, from what I’ve been reading tonight. One woman recounted her efforts to get McCain-Palin signs and bumperstickers. She lives in a very Democrat county of Tx, and had trouble even finding the Republican HQ. When she got there, the one woman staffing the office told her she’d experienced a run on the limited stock she kept available. Looks like the McC campaign is going to have to get the printing presses working overtime!
Until today I did not realize how deeply disenchanted and profoundly angry many Democrats are about the outcome of their primary process. It’s not only that Hillary didn’t make it - though that’s certainly a big issue - it’s also that many of the bloggers and responders I’ve read today reject Obama on the basis of his lack of experience, questionable character, persistence in keeping his background, friendships, medical records, etc. a secret, ‘wrong’ attitudes about national security and the economy, and virulent assaults on anyone who stands in his way both back in Chicago, and on the national stage.
It helps that they feel they have a great alternative in Sarah Palin, and I feel re-confirmed in my earlier assessment that Palin is going to make it possible for McCain-Palin to win comfortably. (However, it does not look like the Republicans will get the same cross-the-lines support at the level of the Congress or in state elections.)
I have a friend of the family who is in her 70’s and has never voted Republican who is moved to vote for McCain because of Palin and what happened to Hillary.
I also have liberals in my family who have decided they are just sitting this one out. They were huge Hillary fans but can’t make the jump to McCain.
I wholeheartedly agree on the Congress.
Oh boy is this a made up article! Hilary supporters don’t even know what Hilary stands for if they would vote for McCain. This is absolutely ridiculous. If you list out every single issue, Hilary and Palin have opposite views on every single one. This article is a joke and probably was written by someone who works for the Republicans. Or perhaps it is by someone who really has not done their research.
Why is it that people think Sarah Palin is so great ? List ten things you think she has accomplished and I can guarantee you most of them are false. She has told lie after lie in the speeches so far-oh yeah, speeches she did not even write!
There are not tons of democrats defecting to McCalin-Palin - some of the racists probably are of course-because otherwise there would be no other reason. McCain is not a maverick and neither is Palin, and they certainly aren’t reformers. Palin has taken more pork barrel money in her 18 months then some Democrats have taken their entire careers! And on the social issues, she is as far to the right as is possible. For book banning, cut special education by 62%, anti abortion even if a child is raped by a relative, gee what else?
DO YOUR HOMEWORK before spouting out such nonsense. How embarrassing to live in a country where people are actually voting for someone just because. Because on the issues, Palin ain’t Hilary. On experience, she does not come close. And please don’t compare her to Obama. McCain is at the top of the ticket and clearly he is losing it.
Asking Democrats who can think to choose between McCain or Obama is to some extent meaningless. They can either support McCain or sit this one out.
your print on the page is so small it can be read— so why do you even put up a page on the net? why are you using a size1 fount? if there are spelling errors that is because I cannot see what i’n typing. YOU need to change this—because it is completely stuipd to up a web page tha no one can read.
Don
“My” is a typical Obama supporter, and the author of the article is clearly a Republican.
Mrs. Clinton is not relevant. End of discussion.
Mrs. Palin has more experience than Mr. Obama, and if experience matters…
Mrs. Palin is able to deliver a good speech and to speak in coherent sentences, and if rhetorical skills matter…
Mrs. Palin can play basketball, and if this matters, a challenge match could be organized by a responsible TV network…
“There are not tons of democrats defecting to McCalin-Palin - some of the racists probably are of course”
This statement is one of the many reasons so many of we lifelong Democrats are flocking away from our Party. I am no racist and calling me one is certainly no way to keep me in the fold. Donna Brazile told us that Obama didn’t need us, so we will be glad to vote for someone that does. Clinton’s treatment by the DNC and the press was awful but that isn’t why we are leaving. We are leaving because the far-left nuts have taken over OUR Party. What happen to the Party of Scoop Jackson? When did our Party go from taking pride in national security to being a bunch of latte-drinking sissies?
So what if the Republican Party and I don’t agree on many issues. They will serve me just fine as a means to an end. The current Democratic Party has to be destroyed so it can be rebuilt to its former self. The fools that are in charge must be crushed.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Until the cancer of the Democratic Party known as Dean, Pelosi, Brazile and Obama is destroyed, the Republican Party will be my friend.
My husband and I are lifelong democrats who decided to vote for McCain after we saw what the DNC did to Hillary. The media bias also helped sway us.
Just for this one election…we will change parties. We feel that the democratic party doesn’t work for us anymore so we refuse to support them. They need to lose this one to teach them a lesson!
I have conservative values on issues like abortion and am an active Christian. Still, I voted for Kerry last election because I felt the invasion of Iraq was a really bad idea. I gave Obama a lot of attention because he spoke against the war early on and talked openly about being a Christian. I have to say, however, I made up my mind to support McCain this time around. It was a mix between Obama’s extremism on abortion (he voted against giving infants medical help if they survived an abortion attempt that went wrong), and his failure to support the surge that is going to help save lives in Iraq that soured me on him. McCain is also a war hero who had no problems taking on the president and his own party on important issues. McCain all the way for this former Kerry supporter.
I’m another one of those Democrats who are voting for McCain/Palin. My spouse is, too. We supported Hillary Clinton. The slow but steady move toward McCain over the summer for us has been partly due to the fact that the DNC dismissed our votes and our anger over the caucus fraud and the disenfranchisement of 2.3 million democratic voters in Florida and Michigan.
But, in the end, it comes down to who is the true leader–McCain or Obama? Who is the leader with character, with experience both on the world stage and in domestic legislative qualifications? Who is the one who has been there for this country, and didn’t shrink from the burdens of sacrifice? Who strikes the right balance between hope and reality, when it comes to the economic and national security of this country? And, no small thing to me, who had the wisdom and courage to buck the establishment’s conventional wisdom and pick a strong woman for his VP?
Barack Obama hasn’t the courage, the experience, the wisdom, the maturity or the judgment to be the leader of this country. I can’t believe the Democrats allowed caucus fraud and disenfranchisement to propel this man into the nomination, much less would vote for him for President of our nation. Obama is immature, narcissistic, inexperienced, unqualified, and he’s a liar. He’s the sort of person who lets everyone else do the heavy lifting, then he breezes in when it’s done, and accepts the accolades for the work with reptilian charm and hollow speeches about ‘teamwork.’ You’ve seen the type; they’re hated by everyone who actually DID the hard work but the aura of invincibility they create around themselves protects them; that and their sly talent for sucking up to the bosses.
Was a hillary supporter, now a McCain/Palin supporter. Am totally disgusted by the DNC leadership and media for their treatment of Hillary. Also repulsed by Obama’s smear campaign against both Hillary and Bill in implying that they are racist — Obama was so hungry to win that he didn’t care what it took — what he did is unforgivable. Also didn’t appreciate the Zimbabwe tactics regarding Florida and Michigan votes! I don’t recognize this “democratic” party and I certainly don’t want any part of it.
I never was a Hillary or Obama supporter. But my family in Michigan who are all union folks who never voted Republican in their lives are voting McCain/Palin. Nearly everyone of them live in Macomb or Oakland county.
I doubt that the other people posting here are conservatives faking their support for McCain like others suggest. These are real folks who will not vote for Obama. That’s gotta hurt you Obamatrons. Can you say landslide? Sure you can. Go ahead, try, land-slide. See how easy that was.
Thanks to everyone who has provided a witness to this rapidly growing movement!
I’m not pretending to be anything but a Conservative, but I’m not making any of this up. A review of the other entries I’ve posted will show that I not only don’t like Obama’s politics, I believe they run contrary to traditional American values. I fear his victory, I think it will destroy America.
On the other hand, I am a feminist - but a conservative feminist, in many ways a first-wave feminist or early second-wave. I think the contemporary feminist movement represented by NOW can’t see the difference between pro-woman and anti-American. I’m not there. That’s why I’m glad to find New Agenda.
I have not been very keen on McCain, either, as I’ve also indicated in my posts. I’ve been waiting to see who he would pick as his running mate, because I thought that would tell me whether he was going to tilt left or right. He made the best choice he could, for me! I’m a huge Palin fan; I’d prefer to have her at the top of the ticket, but I’ll have to wait for the next round for that.
Those who have doubts about the movement of Democrats away from the party can start with the links I provided in the article itself. Perhaps contact Citizens for McCain and The New Agenda directly.
I would also suggest you follow the link Ruby provided in the first response. Do what I did: chase around the blogosphere a little - you won’t need to take this conservative’s word any longer.
Cynthia Ruccia says in her article that the legacy media don’t want to report on this topic - they don’t want to admit it’s there, or provide any publicity. I think they’re afraid the movement will become a stampede if more women and America-loving Democrats discover how many people are already making the move. But you can’t read contribution after contribution - by both bloggers and responders - recording committed Democrat family, friends and co-workers who they personally know are choosing McCain-Palin, either because of how Senator Clinton was treated or because they don’t trust Obama’s intentions and abilities, without recognizing that something huge is happening.
Or if that’s not enough, just ask yourself why Obama is now desperately trying to recruit well-known women to speak on his behalf. Even if die-hard Obama supporters don’t see it, he does.
Another lifelong Democratic voter here changing sides for McCain. Refuse to be told that my vote is somehow ‘locked’ by the usurper who did not win a majority of primary voters. What a scumbag. Anyone in Illinois should get started on recruiting some oppostion to Obama for the next Senate race.
After all, like John Edwards, he has done nothing but run for President since being elected. No Obama in the White House, or in the Senate!
My…You want us to list 10 things Sarah Palin has done ? We will do that right after you list 10 things Osama Obama has accomplished. Here is a great little research project by politicket.

Barack Obama’s failed “accomplishments” in the 90th GA of the Illinois Legislature (1997-1998)

Barack Obama is one heck of a community organizer - that is, if you count organizing a directory of Community College graduating students. This was Barack’s sum total of TWO YEARS spent in the Illinois Senate.
Here is a link to Mr. Obama’s activity during the 90th General Assembly (1997-1998):
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/legisnet90/sponsor/OBAMA.html
You can see from the link that Barack Obama sponsored (wrote and introduced) 31 bills over the two year period. Of these, 28 died on the vine - leaving only 3.
The first, SB0574, provided that “a municipality may provide for a system of administrative adjudication of violations of certain municipal ordinances.” as can be seen here.
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/legisnet90/sbgroups/sb/900SB0574LV.html
This bill actually became law! BUT - let’s take a closer look at how it did that.
You can follow the Bill Status here.
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/legisnet90/status/900SB0574.html
Notice how the bill passed through the Senate and then was sent to the House. Upon arrival in the House, an admendment (No. 1) was added that began with the words “DELETE EVERYTHING”. In other words, what lawyer with the skill set of a community organizer wrote this thing! The House re-wrote the bill and it eventually went to the governor for signature. Barack Obama introduced the bill, but can take ABSOLUTELY no credit for its passage.
Next - Mr. Obama tried his hand at SB0755. This bill provided a power grab for the Department of Human Services. You can read the text here.
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/legisnet90/sbgroups/sb/900SB0755LV.html
This bill also became law, but AGAIN, let’s see how it got there:
View the Bill Status here.
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/legisnet90/status/900SB0755.html
After the bill was introduced at First Reading in the Senate you can see how a Senate amendment (No. 1) was added - which again began with the words: DELETE EVERYTHING”.
The bill was re-written by others and eventually went across the governor’s desk and became law.
You would think that Obama would be ready to give up by now - but no! - he made one more heroic attempt at passing legislation - AND IT WORKED!
Mr. Obama realized that he couldn’t write a bill that people wouldn’t laugh at - so he enlisted Senator Mahar to help him write SB0837, which can be seen here. This bill fit the capabilities of a “community organizer” to perfection! It allowed Community Colleges to create a student directory of graduating vocational students in order to distribute to local industry.
The Bill Status can be seen here.
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/legisnet90/status/900SB0837.html
What a triumph! The bill sailed through to the governor and was signed into law - culminating THE ONLY successful bill that Barack Obama passed during TWO YEARS in the Illinois Senate.
Mr. Obama did have one other “feather in his cap”. His was able to pass a resolution honoring a lady who worked in the police department and had died. What a man!
Of course, his other resolution seeking to declare November 1, 1997 to be South Shore Islamic Community Center Day went down in flames. Here is the text of that resolution.
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/legisnet90/srgroups/sr/900SR0110LV.html
Last - and least - Mr. Obama sought to get a constitional amendment placed onto the ballot to provide for Universal Health Care Coverage. He tried to do this through a Joint Resolution which can be viewed here. http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/legisnet90/srgroups/sr/900SJ0048LV.html He failed at this, like so many other things.
All the while, Sarah Palin was excelling at her task as mayor of Wasilla, AK - on her way to be Chief Executive of a U.S. State.
Is this story off limits ?
http://articles.latimes.com/2002/aug/04/nation/na-briefs4.1
Maggie, I hate to say this but McCain is our Joe Lieberman. So the idea of Democrats voting for McCain ain’t that unbelievable.
He is your dad’s Democrat.
Tell me if I’m wrong, but i don’t think McCain was exactly the Strong Conservative we were all hoping for. BUT Palin, I think, makes the pill a little easier to swallow.
The thing about McCain is that he truly is a fiscal conservative; he’s strong pro-life, etc.
That said, he does have a reputation for reaching across the aisle, has bought into such dubious concepts as ‘cap and trade’ etc.
Four years ago Democrats wanted him to be the VP with Kerry. Now some of them act like he has 3 heads.
There are many many women out there like her who have worked in Liberal politics and feel that women are just used by the parties to get votes. Whenever a woman dares to run against a man, Liberals feel no hesitation to spew mysoginistic vitriole. We’ve had enough. I too will vote only for women now as a left leaning Liberal, I will vote for the Christian Heritage Party if that is the only Party fielding a female candidate in my area. I decided this about two years ago before the DNC appointed Mr Obama over a more qualified woman they spewed hatred against. It didn’t surprise me one bit. Women need to take their votes elsewhere and abandon the Democratic Party for what they have done. Blacks did to the Republican Party, the party that ended slavery. Women need to leave the Democratic Party and not vote to be used by them anymore!
Yoohoo!! I am a new member of the “Clinton voter that is voting for McCain/Palin!” I have researched both Obama and McCain when Hillary was tossed up and out, which I will NEVER forget and I cannot even look at Donna Brazzil when she is on TV, I walk away…she said Obama doesnt need my vote. That is ok, my vote is going to McCain/Palin! Don’t ever call me a racist either, I would vote for Colin Powell in two seconds flat……it’s Obama I wont vote for!
Signed #17,546,494! Only a few more to go!!
This is a bogus story - NO Democrat would vote for McSame-Palin! Based on the Republican record over past 8 years - NO Democrat would vote for a Republican … well mabye, if they were a racist.
D’Onofrio…The Republican record has a Democratically controlled House and Senate who are apparently overlooked for taking any of responsibility for anything.
Unemployment at 6.1% Must be Bush not the do nothing congress. Hurricanes moving in must be Bush, not mother nature. Gas prices high…must be Bush not the We can’t drill out way out of this Nancy Pelosi flunkies.
Democrats will indeed vote for McDaddy and Palin. Not all Democrats where their brown shirts into the voting booth.
Count another three Hillary supporters now voting for McCain/Palin. Ditto on all of the reasons previously posted above. My husband and myself, PLUS his 96 year old dad lifelong Democrat are all voting Republican in this election.
As far as being called a racist, that doesn’t even add up as Obama is primarily ARAB-American and Caucasian, with a very tiny touch of AFRICAN blood, but not a drop of African-American blood of slaves. So, that is just another lie being promoted by the Democrat party.
I remember watching Donna Brazille early on saying that she was a Hillary supporter and was sticking by Hillary. Now she says Obama doesn’t need our votes. That’s good because he is not getting ours.
Defected to McCain as well as ALL my family after the RBC Meeting earlier this summer.
Sorry, not going back right now until DNC crashes and Clean House Show is called to remove the old rubbish, auction it or sell on Ebay, then donate the rest to charity, if any will accept it.
Come on Americans…Smell the coffee! 4 years of McCain more acceptable to 8 years of Hell w/ Obama. There will be a lot more then flag trashing with that dictatorship!
McCain/Palin ‘08…..HRC 2012!
This is what confuses me, a little. These new allies of ours will turn on McCain/Palin in 2012 even if they were the best thing since sliced bread. A liberal is a liberal is a liberal.
Perhaps this is what the Obagroupies have trouble with. Hillary is just as big of a lib as Obama. For all intensive purposes, she just as experienced. Yet they wont support him.
We agree on Palin now, but will NEVER on Hillary Rotton Clinton.
I’ve done enought blogging on Newsweek to know that when you say anything that contradicts an Obama supporters world view, they will spew hate and vitriol at anyone that challenges their views. They will use the “racist” moniker at the drop of a hate, as can be seen by the few here. I voted for Gore in my first election and Kerry my second, this year me and my wife are voting for McCain, based on a life of experience and sacrifice. Obama has no record to go on, how can anyone vote for someone that has only his word to go by? He is a politician, is anyone really that stupid to believe what a politician is telling you? I just don’t get it. I know what McCain will do because he has a record to show it. I know what he can’t do, because of the same Do Nothing Congress that will be challenging everything he does….Obama combined with Reid and Pelosi will wreck the US more than Bush ever could. I’m glad this isn’t the same GOP we have seen for the last 10 years. This is a new GOP and I’m glad to be apart of it this election. I maybe go back to Blue if the DNC fires that ahole in charge, get rid of Brazile and brings back the Democratic party from the Left Wing Environmental nutjobs…I don’t see that happening but there is always “Hope” right?
NEPA, there’s no problem with supporting both Hillary and Palin. Some people just want to see a strong woman in the White House and most just are sick of dirty Democrat tricks. They may vote for Hillary when she runs in 2012, but they may or may not stick with the party once she is done.
I also was a Hillary contributor, but now I am a Republican and will be voting McCain/Palin, as will my boyfriend and daughter. So I can proudly say the DNC lost 3 more votes.
Thanks, Kathy! Your post reads almost like one of those National Convention Delegates. lol.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed. I continue to be fascinated by this movement - as well as those few who simply refuse to believe I’m not making this all up.
The count of defectors is growing. Rapidly. Nov. 4 is going to be very interesting, in deed!
Count me in as another of the 28% of Clinton supporters who won’t vote for the big Zero. That 28%, by the way, is from one of the latest polls. So don’t let anyone tell you that we aren’t real, or that we are only a handful. 28% of 18 million votes is most definitely an important voting block, and it is most definitely enough to sink Obama once and for all.
I’ve voted democrat for 37 years. Many, many PUMA’s have likewise been democrats for decades. As others have already articulated, this is more than just about Hillary Clinton. It’s about the way the DNC hijacked the primaries to install their own pick, not caring who the people wanted. It’s about the vile coverage in the media, who were totally in the tank for Obama to the point that they didn’t vet him at all. It’s about the despicable tactic of smearing the Clintons and her supporters as racists. Sadly, no one will ever take seriously that accusation again, even when it is true. The Big Zero has probably set race relations back 40 years to feed his narcissism.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. We are many, and we are extremely angry at what has happened to our party. We will not fall in line for the coup of the loony left. They broke it, now we’re going to sink them like the Titanic.
Thanks, CD.
I do get the idea. And I fear you may be right about the potential for real acts of racism to not get a proper hearing in the future.
Even we conservatives care about that - despite our media-created image to the contrary.
