Guest Author: Runup to the RNC - Brilliant Choice for VP

About the Author:  Born in Boston, I lived and worked in the D.C. area for a time, but have spent most of my life in Tennessee, where I graduated from the University of Tennessee. My political philosophy could best be described as eclectic, though mostly right of center. Read more from this author

John McCain ran a classy ad on the last day of the DNC congratulating Barack Obama on a job well done, referring to his acceptance of his party’s nomination. McCain was referring also to the 45th anniversary of the Martin Luther King “I have a Dream” speech. McCain was gracious and honest and it was a good ad. It was interesting in the fact that I don’t remember Obama mentioning Martin Luther King at all in his acceptance. Obama made a well crafted and emotional speech. He had the crowd whipped up, but it was clear that it was not the black vote that Obama was after. He has taken them for granted. There are a few black civil rights advocates who are getting upset with Obama for “forgetting” where he came from.

Friday, a new day, a day on which at about 11:00AM people were saying Barack who? In the time frame of a few hours John McCain completely erased the impact of the whole DNC with his brilliant choice of the smart, conservative, beautiful, strong, ethical and down-to-earth Sarah Palin for his VP.

She worked her way up the political ladder from a city council member, mayor and then governor. She was a union member, an ethics committee member, she fought big oil on a pipeline deal which resulted in filling the governments coffers while at the same time being ardently pro-drilling and a conservationist.

She hunts, fishes, drives a truck and is a lifetime member of the NRA. What a woman!!

As lukewarm as I am about John McCain because of the obvious reasons a conservative would be, I am newly energized by his new choice of a VP. While it remains to be seen how this helps to build the Republican brand, just as the democratic brand seems to be crumbling and in disarray, I am in no way cocky. We cannot afford to let our guard down at this time. Way too much can still happen. We will have a hard fight but we cannot settle for just a win here. We need to totally pummel and destroy the opposition. There is too much ground we have to gain in the House and Senate.

In the meantime, we can feel good for today. Tomorrow is another day.

  • I begrudgingly admit that the ad was classy:-) and it was the right thing to do. Obama didn’t mention MLK - classy, huh?

  • I also have my reservations about John McCain. He is good on six or seven issues but the thing that drives me (and other conservatives) absolutely crazy is the Global Warming Fraud which McCain supports. I cannot, for the life of me, understand his position here. If I had 10 minutes to talk with him I know I could convince him otherwise. Alas, I don’t have that access.
I have no problem at all with being a conservationist. None of our precious natural resources should be wasted. Common sense dictates it.
When McCain makes a good move I have to acknowlege it as I do on his VP selection. Also, as of late, he has seemed to be becoming more conservative. Maybe it’s just my imagination. In any case it is what it is. The alternative (Nobama) is just too scary to imagine.
