Schumer: Obama Needs Filibuster-Proof Senate “To Change This Country”
New York Senator Charles Schumer sent out a fund-raising letter today asking for support for a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate so that Barack Obama can “change this country.” The Democrats are clearly looking at a window of opportunity which closes in 2012, when population changes will shift Congressional seats and electoral votes from “Blue States” to Republican “Red States.”
We can be reasonably sure at this point what “change” means - - giant steps towards a socialist-type country, run from the top down; higher taxes, greater wealth-redistribution, nationalized health care, “free” services provided by the Federal government, and international treaties which commit the United States to a similar agenda overseas, with a consequent weakening of national sovereignty and national security.
While I am not in agreement with John McCain in every respect, I am far closer to McCain’s point of view, and far more supportive of his agenda, than I am of the viewpoint and agenda of the Obamacrats. It would take a minor miracle for the Democrats to lose control of Congress, but electing McCain requires only the good old-fashioned hard work of getting the message out to the voters, blowing away the smoke from Obama’s rhetoric, and making sure the voters go to the polls in November.

There’s no way around it. Barack Obama will need a filibuster-proof majority to change this country.
Thanks to your unbelievable support, I just know we’ll have a strong nationwide campaign to build the biggest Democratic majority in decades. I wish I could thank each and every one of you personally for your heart and dedication.
Once again you blew past our monthly fundraising goal to give us everything we need to fight the attack ads and reach out to voters all through August.
There are less than 100 days to Election Day. I am so confident that we will win because I know I can count on you. Thank you so very much.

Schumer’s right.
But, deluded as he and the other Dems in Congress, save a very few, are, he doesn’t see that with the one-finger salute that he and they have given the country on the energy crisis just won’t play well in Peoria or anywhere else, really.
Majority? They way they’re going, they’ll be lucky to have even a mathematical one, much less a filibuster-proof one.
I surely am not voting for obama, but this drill now stuff by the far right sounds like crap. i mean from 2000-2006 when gas prices were rising the majority republican congress did nothing. now, to make it a campaign issue, it’s all the rage. it’s the republican policies that have lead to high prices of everything. of course, shumer is using filibuster-proof in his fundraiser letter, he’s in charge of the democratic senatorial committee!
NYSmike,
Let me point out two things: 1) a party in the minority can prevent a lot of things from happening when they are committed - and the Democrats have been committed to stopping increased domestic oil production for decades; and 2) increased domestic oil production in many areas only becomes truly viable when the price of oil reaches a certain level. When it has been cheaper for us to buy it elsewhere, that’s what we’ve historically done.
But we are now at a point when two things have happened: 1) we have been dramatically increasing our rate of consumption of foreign oil (it is now up to 70% at a cost of $700 billion a year - much of which is going to countries that hate us); and 2) the price of gasoline is now high enough - and will continue to remain high enough due to China and India’s increased consumption - that it more than makes sense to harvest our own oil resources. Our dependence on foreign oil leaves us more vulnerable than we have EVER been. We simply MUST have a stable domestic source of oil.
The fact that it is completely obvious to ANYONE that we should be seeking our own oil, combined with the fact that the ONLY thing stopping us is Democrats, is the only significant story.
I’m glad you won’t be voting for Obama.
